This spring my three brothers and I are taking our dad on a trip along Amtrak's Southwest Chief route, from Chicago to Flagstaff. It's in honor of his 70th birthday this year. Follow along as we document our journeys on the train and around Flagstaff, including a visit to the Grand Canyon!
What we're planning...
The five of us are coming from all over: Ohio, Michigan, Kentucky, and Washington, meeting up at Chicago's Union Station to hop Amtrak's Southwest Chief, the route that runs between Chicago and Los Angeles.
Some fun points of interest:
- Crossing the Mississippi at Fort Madison, Iowa on the historic double-deck bridge with a 525 foot portion that swings out to accommodate river traffic
- Passing through La Plata, Missouri, a tiny town with busy rail traffic. It's one of our favorite spots to watch on Virtual Railfan.
- Seeing the Grand Canyon
- Lowell Observatory
- Meteor Crater
