On one of our recent trips to my hometown of Grand Rapids, we finally made a stop at a most curious-looking building, a bakery on Wealthy Street shaped like a windmill. Given my Dutch ancestry, I’m familiar with the windmill symbol. You see it all over western Michigan, and it still represents a bit of home to me.
Inside is a cozy and eclectic little bakery, covered in bakery kitsch and featuring a counter with baked goods on display, plus a bright windowed area full of cafe tables.
This section looks like part of an old greenhouse.
The bakery offers the full range of cookies, brownies, cupcakes, and other snacks. We saw bagels from another local bakery on display, plus coffee and other drinks. We were stopping for a quick snack, so we snagged two beautiful chocolate cupcakes.
This gives you a sense of their size.
We also shared a monster chocolate chip cookie.
Perhaps because my mother makes them all the time, those simple chocolate chip cookies of the Nestle Tollhouse variety, are always my go-to. When you say “cookie,” this is what I think of.
Cake pans over the door.
And an old bakery box from Holland. Again, the Dutch roots.
We’ll obviously have to make return visits to Cakabakery, but judging by the snacks we’ve tasted, it’s well worth the stop.
