Writing about breakfast at Copious this week had me thinking about one of my favorite brunch dishes: chicken and waffles. Like many people, I was dubious and amused when I first heard of the dish years ago. Nowadays, it’s a go-to, and you’ll find it on almost every brunch menu. So let’s celebrate that sweet and salty combo!
1. Hang Over Easy – HOE just finished a massive renovation of their restaurant, so now’s as good a time as any to revisit. It’s been a couple years since I’ve stopped in there, but I still remember the chicken and waffles I last ordered. It was a great combo: spicy and sweet chicken, a durable and crispy waffle, the right mix of syrup and hot sauce.
2. Taste of Belgium– Similarly, Taste of Belgium has been on my mind because we just visited Cincinnati, and I know owner Jean-Francois Flechet was a big proponent of the streetcar that just started service (I can’t wait to get back to ride it!). Their North Market stall serves chicken and waffles featuring their stellar Liege-style Belgian waffle.
3. Gallerie Bar & Bistro – I wrote about the Gallerie last week, and I still keep thinking about their chicken and waffles. It was wonderfully executed, pairing juicy fried chicken with a savory sage waffle, plus syrup and candied pecans to balance out a zesty hot sauce aioli.
