Beyond Breakfast: Double Happy

July 7, 2021

Double Happy in the Hilltop is one of those wonderful little seasonal, neighborhood destinations. It’s long been on our radar, and after a recent hiking trip to Battelle Darby Creek Metro Park, we realized we were close by, so we detoured for lunch.

Double Happy sits in a bright white and orange building at the corner of Brown and Hopkins. It’s hard to miss the doubly happy ice cream cone on the signs.

As of this writing, they’re open as a drive-through Monday to Friday from noon to 8 p.m. But there are a couple picnic tables and spots on the grass if you want to park and eat on-site. The hot menu features savory delights like burgers, grilled chicken, waffle fries, and pretzels, while the rest of the offerings are dominated by soft serve, sundaes, milkshakes.

What’s unique about Double Happy is their coffee menu with espresso, hot and cold lattes, Americanos, frozen cappuccinos – and most pertinent to my interests – affogatos! I need more homemade soft serve + espresso in my life. Double Happy’s espresso is a little bitter, but it’s offset by the soft serve.

They make all their ice cream in-house using A2 milk from Indian Creek Creamery in De Graff, Ohio. The milkshakes were really top notch, from the Cookies & Cream to the Honey of a Peach (yes, peach and honey) to the Brown and Hopkins, named for their intersection and featuring the classic Ohio combination of chocolate (in hot fudge form) and peanut butter.

We ordered up a small picnic and took a table to enjoy our feast. All in all, it makes for a delightful outing. Burgers? Milkshakes? Fries? Sounds like summer to me.

The Happy Burger is a simple concoction with lettuce, cheese, pickles, and Happy Sauce on a toasted bun. Nothing fancy, but exactly what you’d like eat with a milkshake. I suppose I should have made it the Double Happy burger to get the full experience.

They boast about their waffle fries as a side. They’re hash browns pressed into a waffle iron until they’re nice and crispy. The texture is great, although they’re very heavily salted.

They also press chocolate brownies in the waffle iron, for the base of the excellent chocolate brownie waffle sundae.

I think the name really says it all: Double Happy is a bit of happy summer fun! Definitely make it a stop during this season’s adventures.
