The owners of Alqueria in Victorian Village opened a new eatery this week: Subourbon Southern Kitchen & Spirits. Owners Jacob Hough and Patrick Marker, along with chef Odine Hong, have designed a menu focused around creative Southern comfort fare paired with beer, wine, cocktails, and a size-able whiskey menu.

The new restaurant sits on West Dublin Granville Road in Linworth, in the former Crafty Pint/Hoggy’s space. It’s been given a fresh update but still retains a cozy tavern vibe.

The space includes a couple small dining rooms, a front patio, and a west-facing enclosed patio.

The cocktail menu covers about 10-12 items, with regular whiskey-based libations and seasonal selections. Pictured here is the Manhattan with Redwood Empire Lost Monarch Bourye, Carpano Antica Sweet Vermouth, and Angostura bitters, plus the refreshing Strawberry Summer built around strawberry-infused Watershed vodka, Pamplemousse liqueur, lime, and simple syrup.

True to their title, they feature a whiskey menu that spans local hits, bourbons, ryes, American whiskeys, imported, flavored, and rare selections. See the whiskey list on Subourbon’s menu page.

We tasted a couple starters, a sandwich, and an entree.

The catfish and okra are generously dusted with cornmeal and fried, then served with a spicy remoulade and house hot sauce.

The pork belly burnt ends are given a bourbon glaze then topped with pineapple salsa and jalapeno aioli.

The Hot Lips lives up to its name with jalapeno-infused Banhez Mezcal, Cantera Negra Viva Agave, lemon and pineapple juice, simple syrup, and a salt rim.

It seemed apropos to sip some local whiskey at Subourbon, and doubly appropriate to order High Bank Distillery’s barrel proof Whiskey War, which just this week won Best Blended Whiskey in America – for the second year in a row – at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition.

The green tomato club layers fried green tomatoes, pimento cheese, and candied bacon on griddled sourdough. It comes with a side of expertly done fries.

Meanwhile, the chicken fried chicken features a giant, wonderfully breaded fried chicken breast on top of green beans and mashed potatoes, covered with a peppercorn gravy. Hearty and filling – I would have wanted even more of the gravy.

We’re selfishly excited to have Subourbon close to home, and are happy to see that restaurant space active again. It adds to the dining scene around the small stretch of Linworth, which includes a brewery, pizza shops, bars, a diner, a new hot dog joint, and more.
