5 Restaurants to Try This Month: September 2022

September 6, 2022

Want to support local restaurants? Curious about new openings or under-the-radar finds? Here are five restaurants I’m suggesting you try this month!

1. Valter’s at the Maennerchor

‘Tis the month of Oktoberfest (yes, it traditionally starts in September), which has us thinking all about German food in Columbus. Valter’s makes its home at the Columbus Maennerchor’s HQ, which means some nights you can dine while listening to the German-language singing group practice. It’s the place for hearty pub fare like sauerkraut balls, käsespätzle, pretzels, sausages, schnitzel.

2. Joya’s Cafe

Yes, I’m including the brand new Joya’s in this month’s list! Chef Avishar Barua’s new Worthington cafe reconnects eager diners with his fun and thoughtful creations. The new shop, named for his mother, features full coffee service, sandwiches, fried rice, and yes – his famous cheesy double crunch.

Joya’s Cafe
657 High St.
Worthington, OH 43085

3. Hellas Carryout

This cozy breakfast and lunch spot in Shawnee Hills serves up big and hearty meals, enough to fill you up for the day. We fueled up there before a day at the Columbus Zoo, conveniently right across the river. Hellas is known particularly for their omelet selection, which dominates the breakfast menu.

4. Villa Nova Ristorante

Villa Nova is a Worthington staple, an old school, windowless spot that’s a family favorite for pizzas, pastas, sandwiches since 1977. You can order carryout, gather in the dining room with its walls lined with copper tea kettles, or find a seat at the bar to taste the “coldest beer in Columbus.”

Villa Nova Ristorante
5545 N. High St.
Columbus, OH 43214

5. Red Rabbit Ramen

Most folks will be familiar with Red Rabbit Ramen from their stint at Budd Dairy Food Hall and their presence on local delivery platforms. Starting September 15 they’re making a home for their cart at Echo Spirits’ taproom in Grandview. Now you’ll be able to enjoy warm bowls of ramen to go with expertly made cocktails.
