Lafayette Coney Island: a Detroit institution since 1914, Lafayette Coney Island is one of the original coney island shops alongside American Coney next door. Open late with coney dogs, chili cheese fries, Vernor's, and more classics.

La Pecora Nera: small sandwich shop downtown with killer sandwiches and a house-made giardinera that does not mess around

Madcap Coffee: one of our favorite coffee shops, tucked down Parker's Alley downtown

Detroit Institute of Arts: world-class museum in a gorgeous building

Guardian Building: stunning historic skyscraper that marries Art Deco design with Aztec touches

The Henry Ford: three-part museum that includes the Henry Ford Museum (loaded with trains, cars, planes, industry, and more); Greenfield Village (historic recreation village with all sorts of famous sites); and the Rouge Factory Tour (visit the century-old automobile plant and see cars being assembled)

Motown Museum: dedicated to the Motor City's rich history as a center of American music

The People Mover: free elevated tram that winds a circle around downtown Detroit

Sports central! Detroit is home to the Tigers at Comerica Park, the Lions at Ford Field, and the Redwings and the Pistons at Little Caesar's Arena
