If you’ve read this blog at all, you’ll know that breakfast is my thing. I don’t call myself Dr. Breakfast for nothing. But if you’re a regular around here, you also know my interest in good beer (look here). I wanted to share more about some interesting beers or breweries I’ve visited, so I’m trying a new type of post called Quick Pint.
First up is a pair of summer beers sent to me by DuClaw Brewing Company in Maryland.
Details: Funk blueberry citrus wheat
ABV: 5%
IBU: 16
Thoughts: As you can guess from the name, the flavor and aroma is fronted by blueberry. Stick your nose in the glass and that’s overwhelmingly what you get. It pours a clear yellowish-orange with a thin, fizzy white head. The blueberry flavor is actually not as heavy as you’d expect, based on the aroma. It leans more toward the tart side and ends with a slight citrusy sour note. Like the Morgazm, it’s a good summer drinking beer, light-bodied and fruity. I’d pair it with anything grilled – chicken or brats or hot dogs – although it’d work well with something sweet like waffles, French toast, or pancakes at brunch!
Details: Morgazm grapefruit zested blonde ale
ABV: 5%
IBU: 19
Thoughts: Like the Funk, Morgazm is a good summer fruit beer. It pours a similar color, although with a fluffier white head. It relies more on the sour grapefruit for its flavor profile. It’s up front on the nose, although like the Funk it layers the fruit more in the aroma than the flavor. The taste starts with the grapefruit but ends with a sweet, biscuity note. It seems like both of these beers, being more on the sweet/sour/tart side, would do well with anything spicy. I tend to like beers that are more clean, sweet, and bready to go with heavier spicy foods.
