I’m not being mean when I say “dinky.” Sometimes the best things are small and hidden. I usually wax poetic about my love of DK Diner or Schneider’s, and if you follow me on Instagram (and why don’t you?) you know my Food Adventures tours regularly swing through Buckeye Donuts. But let’s not forget the little donut shops. These are places with no location, a borrowed one, or a hidden one: the Dinky Donut Shops!
1. Big and Little’s Craft Donuts – Big and Little’s does fun donut combinations and sells them at markets (seasonally), Hills Market, and the new Highline Coffee. I’ve seem them tout flavors like salty butterscotch, caramel apple cashew, and oatmeal rum raisin.
2. The Little Donut Shop – Little Donut Shop is on the lower level of the Big Bar next to the Newport Music Hall. They’re your place for cereal- and candy-covered donuts. They use one base cake donut, then top it everything from crushed Oreos, gummy worms, and bacon bits.
3. Lyric Donuts – Lyric started as a pop-up that now has a regular presence at Impero Coffee in Short North, Wednesdays through Sundays. Owner Michael Murtha is a barista at Impero, and his donuts are all musically-themed, like the Velvet Underground (banana custard) or the Ozzy’s Bat Head (chocolate cayenne).
