Someone mentioned the Warehouse Cafe the other day, which reminded me that a.) I need to get there for breakfast again, and b.) I love the charm of a hidden gem. So that got me thinking about the cafe and a couple other hidden gems, which brings us to this week’s theme.
1. Warehouse Cafe – A perfect example of the hidden gem. Warehouse is appropriately named, making its home in an old warehouse and factory on Fifth Street downtown. The decor is a mix of wooden floors, brick walls, and green vining plants in the windows. They serve up some inexpensive but tasty breakfasts.
2. Hemingway’s Coffee Nook – You may have to search a bit in the 175 on the Park building to find Hemingway’s Coffee Nook, but once you find it, you’ve got your spot for coffee and snacks, for holding a meeting or reading a book. The coffee ranges from simple hand-pulled shots of espresso to dolled-up lattes.
3. Jack & Benny’s Barnstormer Diner – A fun discovery out at the OSU Airport, the Barnstormer has often been a stop on my breakfast tours. It’s the same owners, menu, and hours as the campus-area Jack & Benny’s (and the upcoming downtown location!), so you get all your favorite gutbusters and buckeye pancakes and huevos rancheros. Then after breakfast you can climb up the old control tower (in the terminal building) to watch the planes.
