We’re always happy to have more breakfast options across the city, so it was exciting to hear of The Locust Table opening in the heart of Powell. Sitting at a visible front corner of the new Powell Crossing development, the cafe is owned by Karla Woolley, who has a long history with companies like Northstar Cafe. You’ll find echoes of Northstar’s service style, care of ingredients, and interesting construction of dishes on the menu.

The Locust Table has you order at the counter, then grab a number and find a seat in the spacious cafe.

The cafe space is long and lined with plenty of windows. Currently tables and booths are appropriately spaced for social distancing. Near the front is a small shelf offering the ingredients for sale that are used throughout the menu: local honey, Stauf’s coffee, teas, etc.

The breakfast menu is small but focused, which I always love seeing. I’d rather places do a few things really well than a lot of things poorly. The breakfast menu features granola, a breakfast sandwich, breakfast burrito, and short ribs on cheesy polenta cakes, plus baked goods and drinks.

Karla was generous enough to invite us to visit the cafe and try a few things. We started with fresh-squeezed orange juice and a mug of Stauf’s coffee.

Locust Table whips up a variety of scones, including the dense ham, cheese, and chive, and the tart and fragrant blueberry, Earl Gray, and lavender scone.

The dense breakfast cookie might not fit every taste, but it’s vegan and loaded with lots of wholesome stuff.

Kudos to the breakfast burrito: fluffy eggs, avocado, sausage, black beans, a tomato and corn salsa, and cheese. Nice mix of flavors and textures. And I think we need to add corn to more things, especially salsas.

The short rib on cheesy polenta cakes was pretty interesting, too. The polenta cakes are dense squares topped with a nicely seasoned and tender short rib, then a just-right over easy egg with crumbled goat cheese. The runny egg yolk helps with the dense polenta cakes; the whole thing is accompanied by a side salad.

The cafe benefits from a large outdoor patio, too. It’ll allow you watch foot and car traffic, and (hopefully) a train or two passing by.

Overall, The Locust Table is a nicely appointed space with lots of room, an interesting menu, and a great sense of being part of the Powell community.
