Friday Food Bites: Pretentious Barrel House, Law Bird Supply House closing; Original Pancake House joins New Albany

July 26, 2024

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • The owner of Pretentious Barrel House announced this week that the brewery will be closing after Aug. 11 of this year. Located at 745 Taylor Ave., Pretentious specializes in sour beers, and has been open since 2017.
  • Owners Luke and Annie Williams Pierce of Law Bird bar announced the closure of Law Bird Supply House after this Saturday, July 27. The wine shop is located at 1306 Grandview Ave.; it came about as an extension of Law Bird cocktail bar in the Brewery District, growing from the bar’s shifted retail operations during the pandemic.
  • The Dipped Donut in Delaware will close its main bakery after this Saturday, July 27, in order to convert the space into a production facility for its gluten free bakery next door.
  • The Original Pancake House opened its third central Ohio location last week at 6330 E. Dublin Granville Rd. near New Albany. This joins locations in Upper Arlington and in Westerville near Polaris.
  • The new-ish owners of Starliner Diner in Hilliard announced this week that they’ve purchased the York Steak House. The steakhouse owner had been looking to retire after running the restaurant since 1966, and had put the business up for sale. Its location at 4220 W. Broad St. is the last remaining store of a chain that once spanned more than 180 locations across the country. Readers (including myself) were initially confused by Starliner’s announcement, which said they’ve purchased the steakhouse and dishes from it will appear at Starliner. (The same issue came up a couple months back when the owners announced they had purchased Nancy’s Home Cooking recipes to serve at the diner.) They later clarified that the steakhouse and diner would remain open and unchanged.
  • Speaking of steakhouses… The Capital Grille steakhouse is set to open at 1827 Olentangy River Rd. in the Lennox plaza this Sunday, July 28. This is the first location of the chain in Columbus.
  • Amidst bankruptcy and court proceedings, Melt Bar + Grilled has closed its last Columbus location at Easton. It had already closed its Short North shop in mid-2022. The remaining Melt locations in northeast Ohio remain open.
  • Watershed Kitchen & Bar just launched its new jukebox-themed cocktail menu, where all the drinks are inspired by genres of music!
  • Don Tequila Mexican Grill and Cantina opened this week at 1540 Bethel Rd. in the former Texas Roadhouse space. This is near the front of the Bethel Center, which includes eateries like New India Restaurant and KPOT Korean BBQ and Hot Pot.
  • And the Ohio State Fair kicked off this past Wednesday! It runs through Sunday, Aug. 4 and features the usual fair treats plus funky flavors of lemonade, deviled eggs, and other dishes.
