UPDATE October 2025: unfortunately, De Carrousel Pannenkoeken has closed and been demolished. 🙁
While on our spring trip to Amsterdam, we made a lunch stop at De Carrousel Pannenkoeken, a pancake house built out of an old carousel! It sits in a park just a couple blocks east(ish) of the Rijksmuseum.
The interior is indeed an old carousel, with detailed decor, light bulbs running along every edge, and some of the old horses stationed in the center.
The place tends to be hopping, so a host at the door will help you find an open table.
Similar to Upstairs Pancakes and many other pancake houses in Amsterdam, De Carrousel features typical Dutch pancakes – thinner like crepes and covering the entire plate. We tried versions with banana and Nutella.
Plus apple and cinnamon. They offer more than a dozen different flavor combinations.
And one of the other features is the Dutch treat of poffertjes. They’re little pancake balls made in a specialized pan, dusted with powdered sugar.
Like the pancakes, there are more than a dozen different toppings to choose from, like fresh fruit, Nutella, and whipped cream.
De Carrousel also serves waffles, breakfast (including an English breakfast!), sandwiches, burgers, and features a full coffee bar, beer, wine, and spirits.
De Carrousel is a fun stop for breakfast or lunch on a day of exploring nearby museums, parks, and other sights in Amsterdam!
The pancake house is open Monday-Friday, 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday-Sunday, 7 a.m. to 10 p.m.
