Friday Food Bites: Woodhouse Vegan, Coffee Underground closing; GoldCudgel joins Gahanna

April 16, 2026

Happy Friday! Here’s the latest Columbus restaurant news:

  • The owners of Woodhouse Vegan announced that after 10 years in business they’ll be closing their Short North cafe this summer. Woodhouse started as a pop-up at Oddfellows Liquor Bar before opening a shop in Italian Village, then joining forces with Park Service Coffee to open in the Short North in 2022.
  • Coffee Underground, a basement coffee shop inside The Indianola Church in Old North, announced that they’ll be closing up after May 8.
  • A new skewer-style hot pot place called GoldCudgel has opened at 95 N. Stygler Rd. in Gahanna.
  • Columbus Foodletter broke the news that the owner of 698 Restaurant and 1126 Restaurant will be opening Litchi, a cafe specializing in Japanese pancakes, at 940 N. High St. the old Ampersand space in the Short North.
  • A new spot called Soulz Market is coming soon to 246 S. Fourth St., the old Red Velvet Cafe space downtown. Although major details haven’t been released yet, it promises “pancakes, coffee, and community.”
  • Over the weekend an electrical fire caused serious damage at Thurman’s Cafe in German Village. They’ll be closed while they make repairs, and in the meantime they’ve set up a GoFundMe for their employees.
  • Also over the weekend, the Little Bar near campus has been demolished. It closed at the end of March; its site is being redeveloped into apartments.
  • The Winemakers Shop in Clintonville is officially under new ownership, and they’re hosting an open house and celebration this Saturday, April 18.
  • Brunch has returned to The Boat House! The restaurant that sits at the confluence of the Scioto and Olentangy Rivers reopened last fall, and under the leadership of chef Derek Holt, is adding regular weekend service.
  • The Souper Heroes soup-centric fundraiser returns for one night at Seventh Son Brewing next week Thursday, April 23. You can sign up to bring a soup, or just show up, donate, and enjoy some soup!
