Mardi Gras is just around the corner – Tuesday, February 28, to be exact – and you need to start planning your celebrations. Mardi Gras – also known as Fat Tuesday or Pancake Day or Shrove Tuesday – is known to some as Paczki Day. What’s a paczki (pronounced like “PUNCH-key”)? It’s essentially a giant Polish donut. The tradition of making them originated when families had to use up all the sugar, butter, lard, etc. before Ash Wednesday, when these ingredients might be given up for Lent. If you want to prep for Lent in style, find paczki at these three spots in Columbus next week!
1. Buckeye Donuts – Buckeye Donuts has an annual tradition of making paczki. Owner Jimmy Barouxis has called them “jelly donuts on steroids.” They go through a few batches of the donuts, often filling them with lemon, blueberry, or raspberry jelly.
2. Destination Donuts – Heather from Destination Donuts makes paczki pretty much every year. The donuts are distinguished from her regular yeast-raised delicacies by a higher egg count. In past years she’s done fruit fillings and even added a dash of vodka.
3. Wolf’s Ridge Brewing – With some Polish heritage amongst the owners, Wolf’s Ridge Brewing usually makes a special round of paczki in the evening of Mardi Gras. I can’t imagine a better pairing than amped-up donuts + a round or two of WRB beers.
