Hans and Joelle Hochstedler have practically grown up around the coffee business. Joelle’s family owns Hemisphere Coffee Roasters in Mechanicsburg, Ohio and Hans has been roasting since high school; the two met when Hans joined Hemisphere as a coffee roasting apprentice. Fast forward several years and the couple are living in Columbus: Hans is kickstarting the roasting operations for Mission Coffee Co., when they decide to branch out on their own to start Florin Coffee in 2017. They took up shop in an old bakery near their home in North Linden, roasting and selling coffee via online subscription. Almost immediately people began asking if a retail shop was on the way, and in January 2020, Florin Cafe opened its doors. Given Columbus’ love of coffee, it’s no surprise that their shop has been a hit from day one. Given their long-time roots in the coffee business and their focus on the process (“Enjoy the ritual” is etched on the coffee shop’s wall), the Hochstedlers not only understand how to make great coffee, but how to create a warm and welcoming experience around it.
