Friday Food Bites: March 12, 2021

March 12, 2021

There’s a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Boxwood Biscuit Co. (pictured above) makes its debut at 19 W. Russel St. in the Short North today. Originally conceived as a pop-up operating out of Lawbird, the biscuit-centric shop is the brainchild of Lawbird owners Luke and Annie Williams Pierce, and chef Tyler Minnis, most recently of The Market Italian Village.
  • Valter Veliu of Valter’s at the Maennerchor announced that he bought the old Shades restaurant 2486 S. High St.
  • The Columbus Crew announced the Crew Kitchen, the dining operations at the forthcoming stadium downtown, with a focus on featuring local vendors like Hot Chicken Takeover, Craft Culture Brewing, Barrio Tacos, Dirty Frank’s, Donatos, Dos Hermanos, Gemüt Biergarten, Legacy Smokehouse, Preston’s, and Schmidt’s.
  • Condado Tacos has soft opened a new carryout-only concept at 4052 Presidential Pkwy. in Powell. A grand opening is set for March 15.
  • The new made-to-order ice cream sandwich spot, S’wich Social, will open at 869 N. Fourth St. in Italian Village on Wednesday, March 17
  • Hai Poke announced they won’t reopen their location at 194 S. High St. downtown, instead turning over the space to a new operator. Their store at 647 N. High St. in the Short North remains open.
  • The La Poblanita taco truck at 3825 Indianola Ave. in Clintonville reopened this week
  • Multiple sources reported that the owners of Balboa and Grandview Cafe announced that Balboa (1312 Grandview Ave.) will not reopen, but will transform into Round II, a bourbon and barbecue-focused restaurant
  • Black Radish Creamery opens its new stall in North Market Bridge Park today

St. Patrick’s Day is coming!

  • St. Patrick’s Day celebrations will again look very different this year, but there are still events going on during the day:
  • For a roundup of Worthington St. Patrick’s events, from green beers to to Irish cream lattes to, check out my blog post on Experience Worthington’s site
  • Visit Dublin Ohio is hosting a variety of socially distanced St. Patrick’s Day activities, from public art to digital cocktail trails to a parade viewable from your car
  • Dempsey’s downtown is hosting a St. Paddy’s Day shindig split between the restaurant, the Jury Room event space, and The Point on the Park
