Friday Food Bites: Maple Street Biscuits joins Worthington, Safia Sweets closing, Hiraeth opens soon

July 28, 2023

There’s always a lot happening in the Columbus restaurant world! Here’s the latest:

  • Safia Sweets & Kitchen announced on social media this week that it will close next month on Aug. 20. The upscale Somali restaurant, located at 2375 Silver Dr., opened this April in the former Big Boy next to Historic Crew Stadium, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner with a blend of Somali, Italian, and American dishes.
  • Maple Street Biscuits, which debuted its first central Ohio location at Polaris earlier this year, opens a location at 7105 N. High St. in Worthington today. The Jacksonville, Florida-based chain, owned by Cracker Barrel, plans more locations across central Ohio.
  • Hiraeth, the forthcoming restaurant from the owners of Chapman’s Eat Market and Ginger Rabbit Jazz Lounge, announced that they will open to the public on Aug. 9. Reservations go live today (July 28) at 10 a.m.
  • Pat & Gracie’s opened its new downtown location yesterday at 121 S. High St., in the former spot of BurgerIM and the Chintz Room.
  • The final day for Sideswipe Brewing is this Sunday, July 30, and they’re asking for help to drain the kegs this weekend! Sideswipe has sold its space to Thunderwing Brewing, which will open sometime this fall.
  • This weekend is also your final chance to visit Figlio’s Upper Arlington location at 3712 Riverside Dr. It’s closing on Saturday, July 29. Filgo’s home, the Golden Bear Center, will be torn down for redevelopment in the coming months. Their Grandview and Dayton locations remain open.
  • In case you missed it, you can get breakfast from local food trucks every Wednesday morning from 7:30-10:30 a.m. at the Columbus Commons through the month of October. They’re also featuring a lunch-time food truck food court every Thursday in season.
  • This Saturday, July 29, starting at 11 a.m., you can stop by Bake Me Happy for a pop-up from Sloppy Shack, in which one of employees is dishing out house-made sloppy joe sandwiches!
  • The Columbus Food & Wine Festival is this Saturday and Sunday, July 29-30, at Gravity, 500 W. Broad St.
  • The Columbus African Festival is this Saturday and Sunday as well, at Genoa Park downtown.
  • The Ohio EggFest, a celebration of all things Big Green Egg, takes place this Saturday, July 29 from 10:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Fortress Obetz.
  • Finally, I’m doing a virtual talk on Wednesday, Aug. 23 with the Columbus Metropolitan Library, all about A Foodie’s Guide to Columbus. You can register here!
