Important announcement: today is NATIONAL DONUT DAY. Stop what you’re doing and celebrate.
Okay, seriously, I know we have a national day for everything, but a special day for donuts is an easy one to love and embrace. In doing my sacred/civic duty for National Donut Day, I present my three favorite donuts in Columbus:
1. Buckeye Donuts‘ buckeye donut – You have to go for the namesake donut, right? The buckeye donut is a yeast-raised pastry with chocolate icing and a generous dollop of peanut butter in the middle.
2. DK Diner‘s glazed sour cream donut – Simplest is best, right? DK does a lot of great donuts, but their glazed sour cream is my favorite. It’s dense and moist (sorry for using that word, but that’s all I got), with a glaze that cracks slightly when you bite into it.
3. Auddino’s Bakery‘s doughssant – Roy Auddino will tell you that he’s been making a donut/croissant hybrid since the early 90s, well before the cronut craze. Their doughssant is quite simply a croissant that’s been deep fried and then glazed, and it melts in your mouth. They’re incredible.
It’s almost impossible to narrow Columbus donuts down, so here are some honorable mentions: peanut butter bacon at Duck Donuts, the apricot pistachio at Destination Donuts, Resch’s glazed donuts, Schneider’s maple cinnamon fry (aka the Davy Crockett), yeast donuts at HoneyDip, you get the picture.
Also, have you heard of the Butler County Donut Trail?
